I didn't realize until I started listening to this book that the intended audience is young adults/older teens. However, while written simply, it has a very good message about the power of lies, especially those that build. It would be a good "teachable moment" read.

This novel tells the story of school friends Anna, Emma and Mariah who go to a posh school. Anna and Emma are best friends but when Mariah the new girl comes they befriend her. Mariah is not scared of anything and is very brave. She persuades Emma and Anna to lie about why they did not come home on night. The girls were at a party and told thier parents they were sleeping out at each others houses. When their parents discover they lied about their whereabouts the girls lie. The girls tell their parents that they were confronted and threatened with a knife for rape. As the girls parents take them to the police the lie becomes bigger. As Emma was really raped that night at the party she starts to talk to a guidance councellor about her issues. While this is going on the lie starts to unravel and get bigger. The police arrest a man and he is put into jail. As Emma cant handle lying anymore she tells her guidance councellor what really happened. The story concludes with Anna and Mariah getting expelled and are sent to boarding school. Emma is allowed to stay because of her honesty.

I enjoyed this novel somewhat it was a bit of a drag at times.
I dont have a favourite character because there is no "good guy" in this novel.
The conclusion was not so effective it would have been better having a romantic conclusion.

Three girls concoct a lie when they get busted by their parents for a different lie. Sir Walter Scott said something about a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive. This is about what can happen when one lie spins horribly out of control, catching innocent people in its web. Good use of multiple POV, too.

It was a good book, but i've read better. It teaches a valuable lesson about telling the truth, and how fast lies can spin out of control.

A slow to begin but picks up quickly book about the trouble with covering your tracks with a lie. The book is written with alternating chapters between the three main characters allowing the reader to see certain situations from all perspectives.

It just goes to show, you never know how big a lie will get before the lines between truth and falsehood began to blur. Sometimes as hard as you try you cannot take it back, no matter how much you want to...Judging by the title and description I knew exactly what was eventually going to happen, so no shock there, but I liked how Reinhardt really completed the girls characters outside of the "main event" in such detail digging into the the makeup of each girls family life and imperfections, hopes and trials. It's the only reason I could still feel interested in reading the book, being that I had a feeling what the end result would be. It was a life lesson that Mariah, Anna and Emma had to learn, they knew what they did was wrong they knew even when they got caught in their lies, but sometimes the pull to keep a lie a float makes you keep piling up the lies, but what was done was done, though I'm sure no one will ever think them "Harmless" again.

A pretty didactic story of the consequences of lying.
