I remember so clearly the impact Song Of Myself had on me in my 12th grade AP English class. My father had passed away almost a year before, and needless to say, I was struggling with life and unmotivated with school. Knowing this, my amazing teacher pushed me that last semester. She encouraged me to write my own Song Of Myself following Whitman's style. I will never forget the gushing of emotion that flowed through my pen onto my tear stained paper. I still have that paper and it reminds me of how I can dig deeper and purge my soul of angst and fear. And although I wasn't instantly cured, a seed was planted to learn to "celebrate myself". He teaches to love everything, even the grass beneath your feet and to give thanks. Out of all we read that year, this stands out most in my mind, as well as the impact my teacher had on me. OH, and Whitman's poetry was, of course, beautiful.

whitman's sprawling lines and technique, as well as his belief that poetry should embrace the lowly and the profane, led some to call him the first truly american poet. song of myself is the opening poem from leaves of grass. whitman's caliber is astonishing and unequalled. Here are a few lines: " I celebrate myself, And what I assume you shall assume, For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you. I loafe and invite my soul, I lean and loafe at my ease...observing a spear of summer grass." WHAT CAN I SAY? WONDERFUL!!!!
