Matilda "Tillie" Harris pregnant, and her baby is ready to be born even though Tillie and Simon aren't ready yet. They think they have more time to prepare. Simon is out of town and Tillie is trying to get setted in their new apartment. Tillie is unprepared and calls her father for advice on what she should do. This causes her to remember her life as an eight-year-old when her mother became ill. Her mother, Mara, loves her children but becomes overwhelmed with the day to day tasks that are a part of life. She suffers from debilitating depression. Her husband and children don't understand why she has withdrawn from the world. Tillie acts out at school and is not accepted by her peers. When her family moves, her mother disappears for a year. When she finally becomes a part of her family's lives again, she tries to fit in but finds life exhausting. Tillie tries to understand her. Phil gives up on her.
