The characters are fully-fleshed out and full of depth and realism. Best of all, the mystery's slow revelation is expertly written and ties the past & present up in a tragic bow.” see full review » see other reviews » |

Set in Mississippi, this mystery novel has well written characters and a setting which is a character in itself. Silas Jones a black kid and his one time friend Larry Ott grew up as boys in a small town. Even though Larry is odd and awkward Silas is his friend when they are alone in the woods to play. But when they get to school, Silas joins his classmates as the ignore and sometimes tease Larry. When a girl disappears and Larry is the chief suspect, the whole town turns on Larry accusing him of being a serial killer. Although nothing can be proved and Larry is never charged-- for many years Larry lives a friendless life caring for his mother. When another girl disappears Larry is blamed ....The psychological nuances of this book raise it well above other mystery novels ....”

Continuous background building slows the story to a molasses like pace. 3 stars!!!”

This book is about the South, race, dysfunctional families, wierdo sickies, but even moreso able loss, patience, love and forgiveness. I'd even read it again!”

I suppose I was just a bit disappointed, or let down, with the ending.”
