Anna is looking forward to her senior year in Atlanta, where she has a great job, a loyal best friend, and a crush on the verge of becoming more. Which is why she is less than thrilled about being shipped off to boarding school in Paris until she meets Etienne St. Claire: perfect, Parisian...
Anna Oliphant: Anna is the main character, hence the title. It's her senior year and instead of getting to spend time with her friends, family, and a crush on the brink of becoming something more, her father ships her off to Paris to spend a year at the School of America in Paris. Anna at first struggles to fit in in Paris, but her new group of friends help pull her out of her shell, and it doesn't take long for her to realize that there's a whole world of people out there.
Monsieur St. Clair: Etienne St. Clair is the type of guy whom everyone can't help but like. Most people call him by his surname, St. Clair. He rarely gets to visit his mother at her home in San Fransisco because of his terrifyingly manipulative French father. St. Clair is dating Ellie, a freshman in college, although the majority of the girls in school are very aware of his "perfect hair" and British accent (Born in America, raised in London, goes to school in Paris and speaks French fluently... it doesn't get any better than that.) He loves history, has an intense fear of heights, and becomes close friends with Anna.
Meredith Chevalier: Meredith is the one who "adopts" Anna into the group. She's obsessed with the Beatles and is a talented football (soccer) player.
Rashmi: Rashmi is Josh's girlfriend and one of Anna's friends. Her younger brother and sister also attend the school and she helps lead Anna through her rough spots.
Joshua Wasserstein: Josh, the only junior of Anna's friends, is the son of a senator and is dating Rashmi. His hands are always stained with ink from drawing so much, and he is St. Clair's confidant.
Ellie: Ellie is St Clair's girlfriend and goes to college in Paris, having graduated from the School of America in Paris the year before. She is majoring in photography.
Bridgette Saunderwick: Bridgette was Anna's best friend back in Atlanta and they were very close before Anna left. She is an amazing drummer and loves using her big words, her Oxford English Dictionary one of her most prized possessions.
Christopher: Toph and Anna spent the summer working together at the movie theater and were on the verge of a serious relationship when Anna had to leave. He is the tough rocker type and has a band.
Dave Higgenbottom: Dave is the only other upperclassman in French I with Anna and he's also in her history class, because Anna had already taken the senior class at her old school. She and Dave have a bumpy relationship, only intensified when they date for a short while in the middle of the book.
Sean Oliphant: Sean is Anna's seven year old brother who lives in Atlanta with his and Anna's mom. He is a big Star Wars fan and is allergic to a certain red dye often used in candies. Anna worries about him eating candy canes or licorice and ending up in the hospital.
