• Special Lt. Jewels Enbran: A 19-year-old disabled telepath, Jewels has spent her life learning to cope with her inability to shield her vulnerable mind. She is paired with telepathic anchors, male telepaths able to extend their natural mental shield around her unprotected mind, and performs missions for Psi Ops and the world military. Her anchors are replaced every two years due to burnout. However, her current anchor, Jeremy Lingley, has been an exception to the rule. He has lasted for five years but now, he too, is about to be replaced. Jewels has grown up alone, with very friends and no time for romance or a social life. All of that is about to change with the arrival of an alien species known as the Gatoan.
• Colonel Jeremy Lingley: Current telepathic anchor for Special Lt. Jewels Enbran. Jeremy treats Jewels like his little sister and is the closest thing she has to family. He goes so far as to risk his health to see to her happiness.
• Dex: Gatoan Crown Prince Dex LoudRoar is a prince and a warrior who is devoted to his people and to his father. Dex, however is harboring a secret, that in the eyes of his people, would make him an unfit ruler for the throne. His hope of a solution is rekindled when the Humans of Earth agree to meet to discuss an alliance. It is on Earth that Dex's future as well as the future of three planets, hangs in the balance.
• Colonel Christopher Manroe: An enigmatic psionic, Manroe is constantly working behind the scenes to fulfill his ultimate goal--a goal that only he knows.
• Brigadier General Daryl Maussey: A military officer who carries a grudge against Jeremy and Jewels that has grown into hatred and a need for revenge against the pair because of the demotion they got him. He will do anything to make them, especially Jewels, suffer.
