  • Deryn Sharp: aka Dylan. Girl pretending to be a boy, working as a Midshipman on the airship Leviathan. Knows Alek's secret and helps him along the way.
  • Aleksandar Ferdinand: "Alek;" Son of Archduke Ferdinand and Sophia, secret heir to the Austro-Hungarian Throne. An accomplished pilot.
  • Dr. Nora Darwin Barlow: Darwinist, granddaughter of Charles Darwin, scientist who fabricates beasties, a diplomat aboard the Leviathan.
  • Master Fox: Alek's master of mechaniks. He is stout, but very good with machines.
  • Count Volger: A friend of Alek's father and Alek's tutor/fencing master who helped him escape in the last book.
  • Mr. Newkirk: Other midshipman on the Leviathin, mother is a monkey luddite
  • Hoffman: A former gunner in the Austro-Hungarian royal guard. He travels with Alek.
  • Rusty: Eddie Malone's beastie (mnemonic frog), a frog that memorizes what is said.
  • Kizlar Agha: Intelligent advisor to the Sultan of Istanbul. The head of his security. Becomes an Ottoman diplomat to the U.S.
  • Matthews: One of Deryn's men during her first command.
  • Mr. Hirst: The engineer of the Leviathan
  • Eddie Malone: American reporter stationed in Istanbul. Writes for the New York World. With a mnemonic frog for a side kick.
  • Hans Bauer: Soldier/mechanic who once worked for Alek's father. He remains loyal and helpful to Alek all throughout their journey.
  • Lilit: Zaven's daughter. A skilled fighter and mechanic.
  • Zaven: An Armenian member of the Committee for Union and Progress.
  • Nene: Zaven's mother and the leader of the Committee for Union and Progress
  • Bovril: Beastie (a Perspicacious Loris) who bonds with Alek and becomes his companion.
