Often I find that authors can provide a little too much detail that makes the book difficult to read. However, Donoghue's brilliant portrayal of Jack left just enough out for the book for it to be powerful and not overwhelming. The only reason I give the book 4 instead 5 stars is because it took awhile to accept Jack's character. He was slightly unbelievable towards the beginning, but as the book progressed, I grew attached to him and his story. ”

It starts rather slow, as I imagine the days must go for this mother-child pair, but speeds up quickly as life turns unpredictable. ”

I thought it would be too difficult to finish a book being narrated by a five-year-old, but after awhile you fall into his pattern of speech and the story moves along at a quick pace. The conclusion was satisfying at least from the young boy's perspective. I recommend.”
