“Wow! What an amazingly and surprisingly powerful novel! I actually bought this book almost three years ago, eager to read it after hearing its intriguing premise (a young woman was kidnapped seven years previous and the story is told from her five year old’s perspective). As the book garnered attention and accolades, I kept meaning to move it up in my daunting To Be Read pile, but after an eerily case of life imitating art, I decided to crack open its spine immediately.
Entirely from five year old, Jack’s, perspective, some of the horror of their plight is lessened by being filtered through his innocently joyful eyes. Still, this is a sad and miraculous story that feels so genuine - both in the actual plotline and in the way the point of view is handled. It is an absolutely riveting read. And though the ending is quite eloquent, it leaves you wanting to hear more of their story.
This is a very well-written and excellently executed novel. So often books that receive a lot of immediate attention and praise can be ratehr disappointing. Not so with this one - it truly deserves all of the received attention and more. It is an impressive novel. The use of the young perspective never once crosses the line into gimmicky or false and in fact maintains a consistent and genuine feel. I am looking forward to reading more from this talented author!”
