“Another great adventure for the Necromancer of some infamy. This time out, Cabal escapes a war torn Eastern European like country after getting caught stealing a valuable book. Cabal impersonates a bureaucrat to get aboard an airship flying out of the country. While aboard he gets embroiled in a murder mystery, political intrigue and gets blackmailed by an old nemesis. Great fun, humor and action. I look forward to the Fear Institute. ”

I think the aspects of the murders were a little more complicated than they needed to be and hindered the story. I found myself skimming, but the action and resolution at the end was satisfying.

I suspect there's more to come but the joke's probably getting stretched a wee bit thin and another outing might just break it.”

It's definitely a detective "whodunnit" kind of story, with Cabal stuck in the middle of a conspiracy despite his wanting to just get away from it all. I love the writing style and dialog, both internal and spoken. Anxiously awaiting the next installment in Cabal's life.”

Yes | No“Forgoing much of the dark fantasy elements of the first novel, this second installment in the adventures of Johannes Cabal is much more Murder on the Orient Express than Something Wicked This Way Comes, and the reader suffers a bit for it. While Cabal is his usual meticulous self, and Leonie is his overly-moral foil, the rest of the characters are a little too static for my pleasure. However, suffer through the first three-quarters of the book, and you will be in for a satisfying, if excessively convoluted/convenient ending, and the brief continuation (kind of a bonus adventure) is a strong return to the dark, morbid amorality we all know and love in Cabal.”
