  • Timothy Kavanagh: retired Episcopalian priest who has lived in Mitford, NC for years. Married to famed children's author Cynthia. Adopted father of Dooley.
  • Peggy Lambert Winchester: the young black woman who cooked and cleaned for his family and was like his second mother. She disappeared when he was a young boy leaving him heartbroken. He had rescued her from harm, and she was ever his comforter and strength.
  • Henry Winchester: a black man, retired railroad conductor, poet, who needs Father's Tim's help and who can provide him with future joy
  • Tommy Noles: Tim's best childhood friend and blood-brother. Forbidden by his father to associate with Tommy because his parents were alcoholics, Timothy and Tommy found illicit ways to be together for the adventures of their lives
  • Roosevelt "Rosie" Ponder: Black boy who worked in the fields of Whitefield with his family. Tim gave him a yo-yo when they were both boys.
