  • Marcia Steinberg: A young teacher and camp counselor that Bucky loves.
  • Alan Michaels: One of the first two neighborhood boys to get polio.
  • Donald Kaplow: A seventeen-year-old high school discus thrower and the Comanche cabin counselor at Indian Hill.
  • Mr. Blomback: The boss at the Indian Hill camp.
  • Mrs. Steinberg: Marcia's mom, former high school English teacher
  • Horace: A local boy with learning disabilities or handicaps.
  • Jake Garonzik: Bucky's college friend that went to war
  • Kenny Blumenfeld: One of the older boys that plays at the playground. Athletic and the strongest of the group. Usually polite and kind but gets very scared about the spread of polio

  • Mrs. Beckerman: Alan's aunt that blames Alan's death on his visit to Syd's hot dog joint.
  • Irv Schlanger: The former waterfront director at camp that got drafted. Marcia wants Bucky to take his job.
  • Grandpa: Bucky's grandpa that helped raise him with such a strong desire to achieve his personal best. He gave him the nickname Bucky and taught him to face his fears.
  • Arnie Mesnikoff: The narrator, one of the early neighborhood boys to get polio.
  • Meryl: Alan's cousin
  • Isadore "Doc" Michaels: Alan's uncle, a pharmacy owner, that delivers Alan's eulogy
