  "The Scarlet Flower" is a Russian folk tale, written by the Russian writerauthor Sergei Aksakov from the words of housekeeper Pelageya.Aksakov. It is the leitmotif of the Greek myth "Cupid and Psyche" and was first published in 1858 in the appendix of the book "Childhood Years of Bagrov Grandson" (Years of Childhood), to, according to the author, "not interrupt the story of his childhood."

  Aksakov hear the story "The Scarlet flower" for the first time from the (illiterate) housekeeper Pelagia when he was a child. Subsequently, Aksakov was surprised by the similarity of the story with the fairy tale called "Beauty and the Beast", composed in French by Mrs. Leprens de Beaumont. Despite this, the plot of "The Scarlet Flower" is the leitmotif of the Greek myth of "Cupid and Psyche," and not an adaption of the European leitmotif of the same myth under the name "Beauty and the Beast"
