Another Kingsolver work of art. This was a bit of a romance novel intermixed with ongoing lessons about nature and the order of things in it. Of course, I was hoping everything would be wrapped up in a neat little package at the end, but Kingsolver ended her book in a surprising way. I went...

This book follows the stories of three different characters: Deanna, the 48 year old park ranger with a younger lover, Lusa, the young widow and entomologist trying to figure out how to live alone on her husband’s farm, and Garnett, an eighty year old man in the midst of a war of sorts with the neighbor woman. All three of them love the environment and want to prevent man’s destruction of the earth. All three also experience and have to deal with love of all kinds. Kingsolver’s female characters are powerful and burst with life. The storyline focused on Garnett Walker is a bit less convincing and engaging. The ending provided no idea of where the characters ended up, but I personally want to believe that Little Rickie grew up and he and Lusa were happy, despite the disapproving family.

Very astute study of the cycle of life from insect, bird, mammal. Discussion of the necessary balance of predator and prey, and clear reasons why not to use insecticide or herbicide to alleviate a perceived nusance. There is a strong romance and survival of several intertwining stories of people on an Appalachia mountain side. The clear theme of oneness and interplay of all living creatures with their environment. As each one acts, reacts, survives, or dies affects and interacts with all others in the environment. Kingsolver weaves these heady topics craftly into the lives of the people and it is a facinating, thoughtful read.

    Finished!
Good story, nicely told. The ending is a little much, heavy with symbolism and full of itself. This was also a quick read. I would recommend it for fun reading.

    My first impression:
I'm up to about 90 pages, and have already found myself reading through a section for the storyline, then going back to reread shorter passages over. This is very rare for me to do! The book is dripping with romantic, passionate, intensity- of and for the natural world, and love itself. I had gone to the library to find a Kingsolver book, since I have never read her before. I had tried a book on CD, but the CD was damaged and I did not get very far. I expected to find The Poisonwood Bible, but our little local branch only had this one Kingsolver book on the shelf. I took it home, not knowing what to expect and found it perfect for some time on the couch with the cat on my lap. The setting and passion remind me of Cold Mountain. I look forward to finding more time to read it over the next few weeks.
