Finn has escaped the living prison Incarceron, but unfortunately without Keiro or Attia. Now outside, Finn must convince everyone that he is prince Giles, but when another boy claims to be Giles this task becomes so much harder. Meanwhile in Incarceron, Attia meets Rix a magician who claimes to have Sapphique's glove. She steals the glove from Rix and goes on a journey with Keiro to bring the glove to the prison, who needs it for escape.

What I liked about this book was that I loved the story. When I know I love a book, I can't put it down. I think about it all the time. I loved the way the story switches off between the Finn and Claudia story and the Kiero and Attia story. Also I loved the thrills and romance and action around eveery turn. It was a great book to read with tons of mystery and suspense

What I didn't like about this book was that I thought it ended too soon. Also that I never knew if Claudia truely loved Finn. I mean, yeah they were engaged but did they really love each other? I wish I could find out. It should have went longer at the end

Characters edit see section history

  • Finn: Like Sapphique, Finn was able to escape Incarceron. However, he finds that life Outside is no better than in the prison. He is supposedly the lost prince, Giles, and is destined to inherit the throne, but his life in Incarceron has changed him and he does not remember anything about his life before he awoke in the prison, except for small pieces of memories which he receives every so often.
  • Keiro: Keiro is Finn's oathbrother who yearns to escape Incarceron. He acts tough and doesn't show his feelings, but in reality he's frightened of what will happen and what he is. Keiro shuns "halfmen", although we find out he is one himself. He is scared to face the truth and admit to his flaws.
  • Claudia: Daughter of the Warden who wants to set Finn on the throne and save her world from Era and Protocol. She was engaged to Prince Giles as a young girl, until his mysterious "death". Many see her as haughty and stuck-up.
  • Attia: Former slave in Incarceron, trying to help Keiro escape. However, she does not want to Escape at the cost of the remaining Prisoners' lives.
  • Jared: Sapient and Claudia's tutor. His age is never specified, although we know he is dying from a disease.
  • Warden: Claudia's father, now in Incarceron
  • Rix: Magician; he claims to be the Dark Enchanter who knew Sapphique. He runs a show where he preforms magic in front of a crowd. His life's work and all his tricks and props will be passed onto his Apprentice.
  • Queen Sia: Queen of the Realm, mother of Caspar, thought to be a sorceress
  • Prince Caspar: Son of Sia, a petulant boy Claudia is betrothed to after the death of Giles.
  • Medlicote: Secretary to the Warden
  • Incarceron: The prison, becoming aware. It wants to Escape itself, and see the stars.
  • Sapphique: Mythical figure who once Escaped, and was the only one ever to do so.Also known the Nine-Fingered One.
  • The Pretender: He claims to be Prince Giles. Claudia calls him the pretender.

For myself, I claim only to be a knight, advancing in a crooked progress. Do we move ourselves, do you think, or does a great gloved hand place us on our squares?”
