• Added a character: Danny Beckett: Long Beach Homicide Detective who has a knack for drinking as a method of dealing with the recent loss of his wife. He blames himself for the loss of his wife as they became distant causing her to go on a trip that ultimately resulted in her demise. Little is given of his past other than the fact that he is the son of a sheriff (who was killed on duty) and enjoys reading popular mystery novels. An important fact to note: he wears a wrist watch that he is unwilling to change as it is a gift from his late wife. He is dry, sarcastic and somewhat unconventional as he follows his hunches. He is by no means a hard-boiled detective but his own personal demons create a seperation between the social world and himself. He is fond of Grey Goose vodka.

• Added a character: Jennifer Tanaka: Detective Second Grade and Danny Beckett's partner. They became partners shortly before Danny's wife passed away. She is of average height, of a sturdy built with short black hair. She is adept in various forms of martial arts from which we know she has a black belt in tae kwon do and is a third-degree black belt in aikido. Jen teaches martial arts on Saturday afternoon in a city program for at-risk youths.

• Added a character: Lieutenant Ruiz: Head of the Homicide Squad. He is tall, lead with slick black hair and a leathery sandblasted face. He is described as being hard and somewhat scary. He began his career with the Texas Rangers and moved to East LA from which he recieved half a dozen commendations and came to Long Beach to run his own homicide squad. He understands that there exists a political game and how to play it however he will not put his political gain above the justice of the law.

• Added a character: Elizabeth Williams: The first murder victim that spurs the novel. She is an English Teacher who is well beloved by all except the fellow teachers with simple jealousy issues. She is loosely connected to Danny, as she attended his wedding, and is murdered for a simple framming narrative.
