“A good read. How does he come up with these things?
You can get lost in the novel that the character is writing. Tons unresolved at the end.”
“A genius idea of having characters going through a mid-life, and quarter-life crisis. Existential genius, and a finale that is a great critique of modern literature, and literary criticism. A good return to form after two so-so books. ”

TITLE/AUTHOR: The Gum Thief by Douglas Coupland
RATING: 4.5/B+
GENRE/PUB DATE/# OF PGS: Fiction/2007/275 pgs
SERIES/STAND ALONE: stand-alone
TIME/PLACE: Present/anywhere USA
CHARACTERS: Roger/middle-aged sales assoc at Staples Bethany/early 20's sales associate at Staples
FIRST LINES:A few years ago it dawned on me that everybody past a certain age -- regardless of how they look on the outside -- pretty much constantly dreams of being able to escape from their lives. They don't want to be who they are any more. They want OUT. That list includes Thurston Howell the Third, Ann-Margret, the cast members of RENT, Vaclav Havel, space shuttle astronauts & Snuffleupagus. It's universal.
COMMENTS: library book, have enjoyed other books by Coupland. Humourous observations of contemporary life.
