“Hey Arrows! Today’s book is When I Was Joe by Keren David. I have to say that the author had me from the very first sentence! Could you put down a book that starts out like this?
It’s one thing watching someone get killed. It’s quite another talking about it. When it happened, I didn’t realize exactly what I was seeing, and my heart was thumping so loud I couldn’t hear anything else. My mind was whizzing around at hyperdrive speed—trying to work out what was going on. And I ran away as fast as I could.
As it turns out, Ty has witnessed a violent knife fight that results in a death. Urged to do the right thing by his grandmother, Ty goes with his mother to give a statement to the police. But it turns out that the guys involved are part of a violent gang, and Ty’s life is in danger. The police urge Ty and his mom to go into the witness protection program until he can testify against them at trial. Ty and his mother leave London, and move to the suburbs where Ty becomes Joe. He changes his appearance and he gets an opportunity to re-make himself at his new school, where he becomes a very popular guy. He realizes he is really a talented runner, and everything is going okay.
But as the book unfolds, we realize that Ty has not told the police the whole story. And then his grandmother is violently beaten and is hospitalized in order to draw Ty and his mother out of hiding. Will Ty get to testify? Will he stay at his new school? Or will the gang find him and get their revenge. I’m not going to tell you—you will have to read the book. I guarantee you will not put this book down!

“Can you imagine how it would be like to be under a witness protection? Well Ty, who soon became Joe is a guy with many secrets. He was in the crime scene when his best friend got stabbed. Since the police thinks there is a lot of dangerous people behind this crime, they have decided to change Ty and his mom, Nicki's identity completely. They got a new looks, new place, new name, and new school. He also has to lie about everything. He doesn't have anyone to talk to when he feels like he wants to reveal his secrets. But will he be able to keep his secrets without getting killed? ”Anna I wrote this review Friday, September 14, 2012. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
“When 14-year-old Ty witnesses a stabbing, he's traumatized enough. But life gets even more complicated when he and his Mom have to go into the Witness Protection Program and have to complete erase their identities. They are given 30 minutes to pack their bags and leave their home. They must totally change their appearances and they cannot have contact with anyone from their past life.
This transition is difficult at first, especially for Ty's mother. But it turns out that Ty actually likes being Joe. At his old school, he was pretty invisiable. But at his new school, he can completely reinvent himnself. He's popular and doing well in sports.
Unfortunately the gang members who started this whole mess are still ou there and he is still in danger. And as Joe gets closer to his new friends he still cannot tell them the full truth about himself. The readers start to realize that we don't know the full story either...”
“This book had a pretty good storyline, but the way it was written made it very predictable. ”Cliodhna G. wrote this review Saturday, April 14, 2012. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
“This book was really good, and had lots of unsolved secrets and mysteries, which made me want to read it more. When I first started, I didn't think I would like it but then, I got really into the characters and felt for them.”Christina wrote this review Saturday, November 26, 2011. “Ty is a witness to a murder, the murder of his best friend. The police want to make sure that Ty is available to testify when the time comes, so they put him and his Mum into a witness protection program. A new town, new school, a new image, and a new name, this is the first time ever that he is popular with his peers. He loves his new life, but when he confides in someone about his past he will have to move again and start all over. ”readsall wrote this review Tuesday, September 27, 2011.
