I just picked this one up last night, after finishing the one before, I think that one was Treason's Harbour. These books are great. Really. Else I wouldn't be reading them straight through. Thanks to the wonderful Helen DeWitt for recommending them.

The Aubrey/Maturin series all kind of meld together in my head, however I liked them all. It was different reading than usual, and I think I liked that fact. I normally wouldn't read historical fiction about British war ships during the Nepoleonic Wars, but hey, they were great :)

    This one was my favorite.

This was just okay. The things that I find really interesting about this series are the character development of the two heroes, Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin; the historical setting from the English perspective; and the action sequences, either sailing in tough weather or in battles. Volume 10 had very little of these. Navigating Cape Horn and riding out a typhoon in the mid-Pacific were well written. The political and military issues that came up when Aubrey and Maturin wound up on an island with the crew of a wrecked American warship were interesting. But the book was mostly about sailing a large ship, okay but not gripping. Also frustrating was that the book just ended. It read like O'Brian hit the requisite number of pages and stopped. This is worth reading if you intend to read the whole series. Otherwise, pass.

    (book 10 of a 21-book series, published 1984):
6980 pages of pure joy - culturally & linguistically immersive historical literature, set on the sea of the Napoleonic Wars. Ah, so captivating, I sincerely miss plunging from one book to the next now that they're complete. Yes, this was an adventure my Mom started me on, buying one of the first books as a present based on a review she read. The language, the leadership, the relations, the sea, rich with characters one learns to love. I'll look back with fondness on my 21 weeks of sailing with O'Brian across his inspired imagination.

Good character based moments as always, but the storyline in this one was not as good and was disjointed. It may be the sign of a very long series beginning to fizzle out. We'll see.....
