One of the bloody greatest novels I've ever read. Aubrey and Maturin have a shocking degree of real depth to them, and this particular episode shines out from the series. From the exciting sea battles to the attempts of Maturin to rescue a little Dalit girl from a life in the brothels, O'Brian runs the gamut of emotions in this novel.

Somehow I think I ended up enjoying this book even more than Post Captain. A lot of it takes place on land which is kind of different for the series. It has some really great character development. Especially with Dr. Maturin. Was a great book overall.

    (book 3 of a 21-book series, published 1973):
6980 pages of pure joy - culturally & linguistically immersive historical literature, set on the sea of the Napoleonic Wars. Ah, so captivating, I sincerely miss plunging from one book to the next now that they're complete. Yes, this was an adventure my Mom started me on, buying one of the first books as a present based on a review she read. The language, the leadership, the relations, the sea, rich with characters one learns to love. I'll look back with fondness on my 21 weeks of sailing with O'Brian across his inspired imagination.

See my review of #73 on my bookshelf, the Patrick O'Brian series, set during the Napoleonic War, the best historical fiction series ever written imo.

Picking my favorite O'Brian novel is nearly impossible - they're all really great, and, as has been pointed out by others before me, the entire series really reads like one enormous novel. Nonetheless, book 2 and this, book 3, would have to be among my favorites, if pressed. Great stuff.
