An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge (Penguin 60s S.)

by Ambrose Bierce

Ambrose Bierce's original and innovative stories differed dramatically from those of his 19th-century contemporaries. These 23 tales include his best and most characteristic short fiction: anti-war satires that underscore the barbarism of bloodshed, horror stories with keenly ironic edge, and sardonic "tall tales" of the Old West.

A short story that should be praised as being a first of its kind. Published in 1891, the story’s twist ending is one that’s been regurgitated countless times. Admittedly, it’s quite enjoyable to see where the grim idea originated. Being so short, its a recommended read for anyone with 20 minutes to spare.
