Aubrey and Maturin return to home waters after the long voyage to Asia, Australia and Peru that's consumed to last few books. For the first time since his Mauritius Command, Aubrey is given a proper squadron, headed by 74-gun ship of the line the Bellona, along with a promotion. All is not well with rest of the ships however...
Meanwhile, Maturin returns home to find his wife Diana has not exactly adapted to the rigours of motherhood.
So, another very good one.”
“(book 17 of a 21-book series, published 1995):
6980 pages of pure joy - culturally & linguistically immersive historical literature, set on the sea of the Napoleonic Wars. Ah, so captivating, I sincerely miss plunging from one book to the next now that they're complete. Yes, this was an adventure my Mom started me on, buying one of the first books as a present based on a review she read. The language, the leadership, the relations, the sea, rich with characters one learns to love. I'll look back with fondness on my 21 weeks of sailing with O'Brian across his inspired imagination.”
“A wonderful later additition to the series, one that adds even more depth to Stephen's character (which I almost didn't think possible). Much of it takes place on dry land, for a change, but it's still quite exciting.”
