Evie is just your normal, average, everyday girl. If by normal you mean a vampire-chasing, werewolf-tagging, ex-faerie-dating, girl who can see through glamours. But that's all Evie has known since she was found by the IPCA (International Paranormal Containment Agency) when she was a little girl. She knew that she was special, because she was the only one who could see through the glamours that betrayed everyone else's eyes, but she never thought about what that could mean about herself. To Evie, she is just a normal girl.

But that all changes the day a new shape-shifting boy, named Lend (for his ability to "lend" people's appearance), breaks into IPCA. Lend challenges everything Evie thinks she knows about IPCA and about herself. There is a strange new threat in the world, that is killing all the paranormals, and Lend thinks that Evie may hold the answers. As Evie and Lend try to figure out the mystery behind these horrible acts of violence, they start realizing there is more to their relationship than just crime-solving. As Evie faces the truth about the IPCA and about herself, she'll have to make a choice that may endanger the lives of all the people.....and non-people that she loves.
From the very first page of Paranormalcy, I fell completely in love with Evie! She was "bleeping" fantastic! It's not that often that I come away from a book, just loving the girl that is the "point of view". Even in Twilight, which I loved, I found myself often thinking, "I understand why she loves him....but what on earth does he see in her?" This was absolutely not the case in this book! Evie was funny, witty, intelligent, thoughtful, kind, and beautiful! What's not to love? I found myself cracking up laughing at her sarcastic remarks, and her witty comebacks. I loved that she had insecurities, but that they didn't hold her back. She wasn't afraid to speak her mind, even if she thought people might think she was crazy for saying it. I just loved everything about her! And the relationship between Evie and Lend was just perfect. Lend was such a fun character to get to know. I love how he "wore" different appearances all the time, and that Evie just didn't care at all what he looked like. It was so refreshing to see their relationship progress over time, as they got to really know each other. They didn't just meet and fall madly in love without any real reason. It was perfectly sweet!

I also loved the storyline. It was so unique! It was kind of like "Men in Black" meets "Van Helsing" meets "Never Been Kissed". It has something for everyone! It's funny, light-hearted, sweet, and clever, while at the same time it's unusual, romantic, mysterious, and even at brief times a little dark and scary. It's everything that I love in a book!

This is the part where I normally say what I didn't like about the book. I have nothing. There is honestly nothing I would change about this book! When I was reading it, I kept laughing, and sighing, and smiling, and Kit (my 15 yr old daughter) would keep saying, "What?" And I would just say, "Oh, you have to read this book....you will love it!" And what makes me happiest, is not only that I think this book is ok (appropriate) for her to read, but that I want her to read it. I can't wait until she reads it, because I know it will be one of those books that we talk about and quote to each other forever!

Quotes edit see section history

  • “Evie!” Raquel was booking it toward us in her sensible (read: ugly) black pumps, a frown etching a deep line between her eyebrows. Busted.”
  • “I love a nice dose of electric current in my body.”
    Evie
  • “Apparently being a mermaid is dead dull. I watched The Little Mermaid with her once a few years ago—she thought it was freaking hilarious. She couldn’t stop laughing about the shell-bra thing, given that mermaids aren’t mammals. Plus, as she put it, Prince Eric was far too hairy and “peach colored” for her taste. I always thought he was pretty hot, but then again, I am a mammal.”
  • “Yes, I have a driver's license" I leaned back against the wall, sighing. "Man, that must be so cool." "It ranks right up there with lockers. In fact, sometimes I put my license inside my locker, and it's so cool I worry that the whole thing might explode with the sheer coolness of it all.”
  • “Being dead wasn't supposed to hurt. Where was the fairness in that? If I was dead, the least the universe could do was make it painless.”
  • “Lend.” “Lend?” Raquel asked. “Yes, as in, lend me your self.” He shimmered into Raquel again. “Why not Borrow?” I asked. “Better yet, Steal?”
  • “Oh, bleep.”
  • “Oh relax." I waved my hand dismissively. "If he wanted to kill me, he already would have. I brought him all these sharp pencils, ideal for stabbing, and he's been a perfect gentleman.”
  • “Why does everyone keep asking me that?" Seriously, did I look like some sort of pyscho assassin? Maybe it was the pink sneakers. Or the heart earrings?”
  • “What a lovely balance. Lend shows whatever he wants the world to see and you see through whatever the world wants to show you.”
  • “What do you think? Does this face make me look fat?”
  • “Silver knives! Painful and sometimes deadly to nearly all paranormals!" "Tasey! Hot pink and sparkly!" "You can't always count on Technology.”
    Bud and Evie
  • “A present?...No way!" "I can't believe I made a pink knife." "It's so cute! I love it. Finally, a companion worthy of Tasey...Oh, gosh, what should I name her?" "Whatever it is, please don't tell me. Just keep it sheathed and on your belt." "Can you make me one in brown, too? And pink?”
    Evie and Bud
  • “Let me go and I'll promise not to tell anyone you're not suave.”
    Evie to Vampire...
  • “It ranks up there with lockers. In fact, sometimes I put my license inside my locker, and it's so cool I worry that the whole thing might explode with the sheer coolness of it all.”
Lend to Evie about the coolness of lockers and Driver's Licenses
  • “Lish tried to swear--which is always funny, because the computer won't translate it. It went something like this: "Bleep stupid bleep bleep faeries and their bleep bleep bleep obsessions. He had better stop bleep bleep bleep the bleep bleep rules or I will bleep bleep bleep the little bleeeeeeeeeeep.”
    Evie's thoughts
  • “Okay weirdest thing ever-I just asked myself to take off all my clothes. It doesn't get much creepier.”
    Evie's thoughts
  • “Okay, so poetic prophecies and creepy faerie stalkers aside, I've got an important question." "What?" "Do you have a driver's license?" "That's important?" "Oh yeah! I'd kill for a driver's license! Hey, maybe that's what the poem mean! I'm going to go berserk and start attacking people because they won't let me drive." "Could be, you never know. But, yes, I have a driver's license." "Man, that must be so cool" "It ranks right up there with lockers. In fact, sometimes I put my license inside my locker, and it's so cool I worry that the whole thing might explode with the sheer coolness of it all.”
    Evie and Lend
  • “Oh, and also I think it's a little creepy when you're a girl, but you haven't done that in a while." "You're weird." "Say the invisible shape-shifting boy.”
    Evie and Lend
  • “This shouldn't be your life. You deserve a lot more. Like a locker." "And a driver's license?" "Let's not get carried away.”
    Lend and Evie
  • “Yeah, because I really want to get locked up for the rest of my life. Sounds like a party. In fact, I think I'll just turn myself in right now!”
    Evie
  • “Tell you what. I know you can't get a license, but I might be able to do something better." "What?" "How would you like to come to school with me tomorrow and see real, live lockers?”
    Lend and Evie
  • “Man, I thought you were like some supercool operative and knew exactly what you were doing. Now I find out you weren't even supposed to be there in the first place" "I've got a lot of practice acting. I do it every waking hour, after all." "Well, I guess I still think you're pretty cool." "Thank goodness”
    Evie and Lend
  • “This is so stupid. You aren't real." "I'm not? Ouch. Here I thought we were finally connecting." "You're just my brain trying to make sense of everything that happened.”
    Evie and Vivian
  • “What, did your fairies lose you as a baby or something? They did! Oh, that's rich. Gotta love faeries. Idiots.”
    Vivian
  • “Fine. But school was boring without you there. No one was freaking out over lockers or anything." "They're all fools.”
    Lend and Evie
  • “You're grounded! Are you gonna climb out the window and steal a car?" "Yes, because I'm insane and this is one of your television shows.”
    Evie and Lend
  • “It's gonna take you three ours to get ready?" "I don't know. My dates pretty freaking hot-I'd better look good." "Yeah, mine too. Maybe I should change? What do you think? Does this face make me look fat?" "Maybe go Asian tonight?”
    Lend and Evie
  • “So, umm, were you planning on spending the rest of the night here?" "In your dreams." "Well then, let me go to sleep so I can get back to them.”
    Lend and Evie
  • “Aren't you going to ask someone to go with you?" "To the bathroom? Why?" "Girls never go to the bathroom by themselves." "I'll try not to be lonely in the ten seconds it'll take me to finish.”
    Lend and Evie
  • “You know. I might lose all my masculine credit for saying this, but I'm pretty sure tonight is perfect." "Me too.”
    Lend and Evie
  • “A full season of Easton Hights! No bleeping way!" "It's a small price to pay for holding your hand.”
    Evie and Lend
  • “So we took you inside-What happened to the doornob, by the way?" "Umm, oops?”
    Lend and Evie
  • “'If you fail to report within the next twelves hours, you will be terminated. If you attack any humans, you will be terminated. If you attempt to remove the tracking device, you will be terminated. We look forward to working with you.' I always thought that last line was a nice touch.”
    Evie
  • “Tasers are a one-size-fits-all paranormal butt-kicking option. Mine's pink with rhinestones.”
    Evie
  • “Why are you here?" "I love a nice dose of electric current in my body.”
    Raquel and Lend
