Sometimes I can't believe that I read these books. There's four of them, and at about 500+ or so pages each these took up a LOT of my spare time. I loved them and read them multiple times, but before you even think about, understand that IT DOESN"T READ LIKE WESTERN LITERATURE AT ALL. It was written in medieval China. It's completely foreign, so it takes time to understand and appreciate. It's a "historical fiction," meaning that's it's loosely based on real historical figures from ancient times but has been embellished by the author who relied on various folklore to romanticize his characters and themes. It's covers about 100 years from the fall of the Han dynasty, the subsequent civil wars between Wei, Shu, and Wu, all the way to the establishment of the short-lived Jin dynasty. I could write a thesis on these books.

I'm not even going to start to explain the story in-depth, because I plan on sleeping tonight.

Idiotically, Shelfari conflates several distinct editions. I have the two-volume unabridged UC Press translation by Moss Roberts.

My favorite historical novel. I have read two versions. One a very direct translation and enjoy reading both. Each chapter is like a story of its own and the most intriguing is the philosophy and art of war being portrait. Those who have read this should also see the long TV series from China available on DVD. Each episode is like a high budget blockbuster movie of its own.

This was awesome...right up there with LOTR. Need to read the unabridged edition someday...the translator abridges at really annoying places.

I haven't finished reading this and doubt I ever will because it's really very very very long. So I have read it in parts and skipped some parts. But even so, this book is very interesting and hard to put down. The only reason I put it down is because I read it over the internet and my eyes are hurting. My favourite part is when Zhuge Liang, aka Kong Ming, enters the picture. I would recommend this book to a person who has loads of free time in his hands. It is a classic.
