Grace: The heroine of the story. Grace is fourteen years old and in most ways a typical teenage girl. In the first book of the trilogy Grace's character is still developing. Her lack of courage and shyness are making her an easy target for bullies. She is contrasted against the stronger companion Boot. Grace grows as the story progresses and she over-comes a great deal in the climax of the first story.
Shadow: The enigmatic Shadow makes his first appearance in the middle of book one. Not much is revealed about Shadow's role in Grace's destiny but much is discovered about his role in her past. The full story of Shadow and Grace's relationship isn't fully revealed until the conclusion of Grace and the Drawl Invasion of Earth. Shadow is much older than Boot and knows alot more than he lets on about the creatures beneath the city and the Drawl everyone is fighting. Shadow is a master swordsman and very handy with a long bow.
The Drawl: The monsters from a higher demension. These creatures feed on energy, especialy the energy from living creatures. Having decimated their own dimension they raid the lower dimensions with the aide of special anchor points. The Drawl can appear as fully materialized in a lower dimension or as a vaporous gassy apparition; which gives them just enough presence to leech off energy from their victim. They can only appear this way from one dimension above. So to attack the third dimension they need to be in the fourth. This makes them a target for the cats. The Drawl dont use any modern weapons prefering instead to rely on their numbers, and crude hammers and spears. Many Drawl are covered in spikes and have sharp claws.
Thaal: Thaal is the Cat Pope's liason and a religous zealot. He seeks to see that the prophecy is fullfilled whatever the cost.
Drawl: A monster from a higher dimension, possibly the fifth. It feeds on energy, prefering living energy.
Lodim: A lower Dimensional Being. ie Grace and the rest of the human race.
Javiour Bee: A very large wasp like creature with an exotic poisen. The cats mix it with meade to make a potent alcoholic beverage. The venom can cause halucinations and temporary unconsciousness.
AvonDahl: The incredibly huge spiders that live in the valley beyound the cats' village.
Religion: Grace is in its self a name with a religous connotation, Grace is chosen and to be sacrificied. There are the three creatures beneath the city called the Nellef an easy acronym for 'The Fallen' representing fallen angels. Grace speaks of the restoration to Boot, a time in English hstory when religion and state were at odds. The cats themselves have a pope that coordinates their religion but we hear references to more than one god in the cat religion. "By the Gods!" More of the religous theme is developed in the final book Grace and the Drawl Invasion of Earth.
Growth: Grace is initialy very weak int he first book. Most readers connect woth Boot but people sometimes struggle to connect with Grace in book one. Although she does develop slowly over the story it isnt untill book two that Grace's personality and her counscious starts to develop. Grace's romatic aspirtions change in book two as well. THere is confllict between Boot and Grace in the second story that doesnt exist in book one. As each character struggles to cope with the changes life has broiught. By book three Grace is a fully developed woman, strong and determined. there is very little of the timid young girl who fisrt fought the Drawl.
