“it was okay, but I wish it was a little more clear when it jumped back and forth between times. You would have to take clues from the text to figure out what time and place the character was in at the time”
“new book by julia glassHave you read her new book, "the whole world over?" it took me a while to get into, and it has so many different characters and perspectives that it feels a little overwhelming at first, but i really loved it. she's really an amazing writer. you should definitely read it!”
“I can see your point Shkza, the second June was the meatiest and most interesting but I have to say, I really liked that the story started out from the Dad's perspective. It seems seldom we get an older persons perspectives in literature and I enjoyed his journey through grief and uncertainity as his life was transitioning.”
“I LOVED "The Whole World Over" ! I think she is a great writer !”
“i think if she'd given us just one june - specifically the second one - that i would have been all over the new novel. i think that section of three junes is incredible but the flanking two are no where near as good. also, given the length of the new book i just couldn't commit to it. i might reconsider if i hear more good word-of-mouth, but the reviews were also so tepid that i was put off.”
“Thanks for the updateWinona, I loved Three Junes and it's multiple perspectives. I just added Whole World to my wish list.”
“I agree with Winona. Both of her books are better than average. ”
“I liked The Whole World Over, but at first found it difficult to keep track of all of the characters. I wasn't disappointed, but also wasn't as 'bowled over' as I was by Three Junes.”
“I started it but couldn't get past the character, Greenie's, name. Instead of focusing on the story all I could focus on was what a dumb name for a major character. But you have convinced me that I should give it another try.Thank you!”
“Khaira--Letting go of books:Yes I have been able to do it often. It took several years to understand that my instincts were right on and to let go of the guilt. Now If a book doesn't grab me by 50-70 pages in, it's time to move on. I am an obsessive reader but when I start procrastinating about a book and find other things to do rather than read, I know it's time to take stock. Only once have I gone back and finished a book I have put down and that was because it was for a book group. I still didn't enjoy the book. There are literally thousands of books out there that I want to read and I read for pleasure so why force myself when I'm not enjoying it? It goes along with learning to say no, something I'm still working on. ”
