  • Aristotle: Philosopher, physicist, tutor to King Philip III's mentally challenged son Arrhidaeus and then to the boy's younger brother Alexander (who later becomes Alexander the Great).
  • Alexander: Although the novel focuses on Aristotle, his brass young pupil is certainly not left in the shadows - his odd relationship with his mother, his composure around his peers, his 'soldier's heart'... Lyon's Alexander is interesting and unpredictable.
