This is one of the best books that I have read in a long time. I have read two other books by Ralph Helfer: Zamba, The Story of the Greatest Lion Who Ever Lived and The Beauty of the Beasts and enjoyed these books as well. The story follows Modoc, from her birth in Germany, through her sale to an...

I'm a big animal lover and elephants are big animals. I can't believe it's a true story. Amazing.

OMG!!!!! I just finished this wonderful book and have been crying for an hour! It is a half-box of Kleenex kinda-book! I adore elephants and Modoc was ever so special. The adventures of her and her best friend (human) are almost unfathomable, yet some of it is based on fact!

If you read some reviews, they say the circus elephant the story was based on was actually called Big Modoc and was not the one that the author actually owned. I suggest you read this with an open heart and mind and don't let the true vs. false allegations sway you.

It was so hard to read the years that she was abused, but the vast majority of her life was wonderfully filled with joy and adventure. I can't recommend this book enough! The only regret I have is that I never got to meet Modoc. I will never forget this book -- it is a Must read and one I will keep on my bookshelf for good!

Bram and Modoc, a boy and an elephant born on the same day and their incredible journey together. Thank goodness someone saved it for us in this work of non fiction. I am thankful I stumbled upon this on someone's Shelfari favorites. Thank you.

A lovely tale of the mystical powers that binds animals to humans. A sad and triumphing book which is hard to put down at the end.

Interesting facts and stories. I liked the elephant and Bram, but we didn't seem to really get to know them. It seems to me that this was because it was not very expertly written. The writing seemed to sort of distance the reader from the characters. The author claims to have taken "poetic license," but I didn't find his writing very creative.

This booK did not seem very believable. It was poorly written and there wasn't much documentation for facts. I learned little about elephants and was disinterested in the primary characters. Must be a die hard animal lover to maybe enjoy it more.
