“When a ship goes down a black man saves a little white boy. They are on a raft together, but they are lost at sea. The old man takes care of the young boy, but is still treated like he is not free. The two boys gain a trust and friendship, but will they survive or be found? This book would be great for upper elementary to teach about racial problems in the past, and it also raises the question of if we can overcome prejudice today.”Rebekah Anne Russell wrote this review 7 days ago. “The Cay started in 1942 on a small island Curacao.THe story is about a bot named Philip that is in the cay with his grandpa
I am in the middle of the book so i don't really know everything but when I finish i will continue
“This book is a short, quick read that contains a lot of information. The book centers around two characters, a young boy named Phillip and an older man named Timothy. Both are stranded on an island together after their boat is torpedoed. The only other survivor on the island is a cat. Phillip was injured during the wreck and is now blind. Both characters have to rely on the other one in order to survive. The book addresses the issue of racial tensions and prejudices. It is a serious, suspenseful book that is well-written. ”Kiersten Yount wrote this review Sunday, November 10, 2013. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
“This historical fiction book is set during the time of World War II. It begins with Phillip and his family on the Caribbean island of Curacao when they decide to evacuate to the United States. The ship they are sailing on is torpedoed, and Phillip is left blind on a small cay with an old black man named Timothy. Phillip has to overcome his prejudices and fear and learn to trust Timothy. Timothy teaches Phillip how to function on the island even while blind. Timothy dies in a hurricane, but Phillip must carry on until he is rescued. This book is heartbreaking. The lessons that Timothy teachers Phillip are beyond survival; they are about equality and not judging a book by its cover. I love reading the book and recommending it to students.

“This book was about a young boy named Philip and a sailor named Timothy. They get stranded in the middle of the ocean after three days they finally land on a cay. They live on the cay for several months until Timothy died during a wild hurricane while he was covering Philip. Philip was stuck on the cay alone and stranded until one day his mother found him while she was searching for him.”elias calderon wrote this review Tuesday, October 8, 2013. “I would rate it a 3 because it was satisfying, but not intriguing. The author didnʻt include things that would make me say,”OMG, I canʻt stop reading because itʻs too interesting”. An example of the kind of details that he did include was,”We were torpedoed at about three oʻclock in the morning on April 6, 1942, two days after leaving Panama.” That doesnʻt sound very devastating when you read it, so that proves that the author needs to add more detail to the text.”2-Bionce wrote this review Friday, October 4, 2013. “Book Review Final
Summative Assessment - Project - 25 Points
You need to read this book if you are an adventure person. It has everything you need.Story telling and much, much more.
The title of the book is The Cay by, Theodore Taylor. The genre of this book is adventure because they get stuck on an island by them self and they have to find a way to survive. The
Genre of this book is Adventure . It’s Lexile is 860L.In this book there is 137 pages.
I give this novel a 5 ( loved it ) because it makes me want to read and see what happens at the end and it also makes me want to read it over and over again.
One of the setting in the cay is New York City.In new york city it’s crowded and bissy , has a lot of people inside of buildings and walking in the streets.
Phillip Enright is a protagonist person because when he ends up on the lost island he meets a friend and his new friend timothy helps him in rough times even when he is blind.
Timothy helps him with his food (trying to reach the food from high up or down.
Phillips goal is to try to do things on his own and to not use Timothy a lot of times.
The antagonist is the ocean because while they were stuck on the island they had a tsunami and made it hard for Phillip Enright to survive , because they were blind.
One of the largest conflicts (and the initiating conflict) is that World War II breaks out and the germans arrive in Curacao. This is obviously resolved with the end of the war.
The authors message was that no matter what color [[The Cay#|skin]] you have you are no different than anyone else.
So just because you look different on the outside doesn’t mean you are different in the inside.
I would recommend this book to readers if they like a good adventure and mysterious
Why i would recommend this book is because it is very fun to read.
I suggest the people who love adventure read this book.
It would be very fun for them.
The part that i liked was when they had to survive the tsunami and had to survive on a little bit of food and water.
The best part was when they met each other and became friends.
I dislike the part when they were lost on an island and was swept away from the other people on the boat that were with them before.
How this could be improved is that they should be all lost on an island so they can still see each other but needs to work together.
“Introduction - Catch the reader’s attention; make the reader want to read more
Little Philip was excited that the german came to invade the island where he lived but when he has his own problems, he has to concentrate on surviving!
Title - The Cay Author - Theodore Taylor Genre - Adventure Lexile - 860 Pages - 137
I give The Cay a 5 out of 5 because it got me engaged and i didnʻt want to put the book down it gave me clear discriptions to connect to the words.
Body - Briefly summarize the novel; do not reveal too much; NO SPOILERS; cite examples from the novel
One setting in the book was a Cay or an island, coconut trees would grow there also vines the ocean was real pretty. The importance of this island was a man and a boy have to survive for a long time with no food sources like meat, apples ext..and also became a home for a long time Philip was a fearless boy that wasnʻt afraid of anything. Philip was brave because when something bad had happened he wanted to put himself out there. He likes to explore different places or thing he had never seen before.
Philipʻs goal was to learn how to survive on his own without the help of Timothy and without eyesight and it is not that easy without eyesight so that was his goal. Germany was a army trying to take over little places so they could rule over them. Germanyʻs motive was to take over the little island Curacao because they thought they were cool. When Philip became blind it was resolved when he was rescued by the army and had to do three major sugerages that gave him back his eyesight but he had to wear glasses. I think the authors message is to always try your best beacuse he tryed and Philip didnʻt give up.
I would recommend this novel because i think people might enjoy an action filled book that gives you a clear picture. I think everyone could read this book. The best part was when they got to the cay and had to survive, I liked the survival part.
I think the author could make a sequal because right after Philip gets his eyesight back it ends! Maybe they could say what had happened to Germanys arm if they had gone away or fought Curacao?”
