I read this last year, with my sixth grade class. I did enjoy it, and doing all of the projects that had to do with it was fun. If you liked the book Hatchet, this is in that same genre but a reading level below Hatchet.

Historical fiction. We used this book for literature groups in 5th grade. It presents the impact of WWII on the inhabitants of a small island, while also focusing on racism. Won the Jane Addams Children's Book Award (1970)
