Book Summary, “The Cay” by Theodore Taylor

    Tristan Krentz

The first important detail is when Phillip goes on a freighter to get away from a German soldier attack. He was encouraged to go by his parents. His mother was worried, so she went with Phillip. The freighter was hit by a German missile and Phillip was injured and he was unable to find his mother.
Phillip wound up in the water after the attack and was saved by a man named Timothy. Timothy was an old Jamaican man. He was tall and had a strange accent. Phillip was afraid of Timothy at first, but later became friends with him. His mother had often told Phillip to stay away from black people and to never to talk to them, so this friendship went against what Phillip had been taught.
Timothy and Phillip ended up on a small island. Phillip was now blind after the attack as he had hit this head. He had to learn how to live without seeing. Timothy helped him to adjust to being blind. A hurricane hit the island and Timothy protected Phillip from the storm. After the hurricane, Timothy died and Phillip had to survive without him.
Later, a boat came and took Phillip back to his homeland of Curacao. He never forgot the man that gave him love and friendship.
I would recommend this book for people who like adventure and stories of human kindness and friendship. Thank you for reading my summary.

Around the 1950s off the shore of Curacao, german submarines were just spotted off the coast. As the people of Curacao try to escape the ichain of islands the subs kept sinking all their transportations to a different country. when Phillip, the main character aboards the U-boat, the last line of transportation. The German subs shoot a torpedo into the side of the deck. phillip gets thrown overboard with his mother. He loses his mother and finds himself floating on a piece of wood with a big african-american guy. with a headache Phillip and Timothy reach a long, desolated island.
Phillip soon discovers that he is blind. Timothy now has to teach Phillip how to work and get food by himself, but one morning, a huge hurricane hit the small shore off the island. With trees blowing everywhich way Timothy and Phillip tie themselves to a tree and hope to live, will they!
