A pearl beyond price for those who love great poetry. Fascinating and rewarding to follow Yeats' creative journey from his early years as a young poet besotted with Irish myth and folklore to the role of apocalyptic visionary and finally to that of an old master whose late poems about aging and...

The poetry of Yeats shows his national pride, and topics have universal appeal.

A poetry book beyond limits. Love the order of the poems, the poems, the man who wrote them. Beautiful.

Obviously Yeats is an incredibly talented poet, and while I can appreciate his work, there are very few Yeats poems that I've really been struck by. Overall I find that I just don't connect easily with his poems. I read this for a Modern Poetry class and the others poets we've read so far (Whitman, Dickinson, Hopkins, and Lawrence in particular) were much more affecting.

Yeats, a formidable poet and writer, always provides readers with a challenging matrix of imagery and poetic form. A traditionalist in the sense of meter and poetics, Yeats was equally a Modernist in his developed use of stark imagery and his optimistic beliefs in comparative religion and metaphysical philosophy. The poems are certainly difficult ones to read through in their entirety. But unlike very few poets, Yeats was able to adapt his style to his own poetic and psychic needs, and so the narrative that his entire corpus tells is a varied and exciting one. Many of the poems are quite accessible--for instance, "The Second Coming," "Leda and the Swan," and "Easter 1916".
