She has led a tough life with her drunk father abandoning her family and living in a poverty-sticken barrio, but she is a resilient character that keeps on going. Smart and funny. Also a book worm.
- Carlos: Esperanza's old high school friend, who has suddenly decided to be much more for her.
- Jake: The good-looking mechanic, who shares Esperanza's love for reading and loves for her for who she is not where she's from.
