I have often been asked why I moved up North - leaving the warm weather behind - and this book articulated what I was unable to put into words. ...” see full review » see other reviews » |
“If you have any interest in the Civil War from the Southern perspective this book will be great. Tony Horwitz is not a Confederate but he is able to look at that perspective with heart and a wry sense of humor. While he presents the certified wackos here as he meets them, he also presents those who represent the nostalgic side as well. Having been in Richmond recently at the American Civil War Center, I realize their multiple viewpoints---North, South and Slave---may be the next step from this book which is now 10 years old. A wonderful read!”

My favorite non-fiction book and one that's never on my bookshelf. I know the places he's writing about, the passions of his subjects, and know when I pick this up, I'll be entertained. I even included this in my bag in Labor and Delivery! Even non-history types love this story. ”

It's hard to believe that some Southerners are still fighting the "war between the states"! Horwitz has an excellent eye for the small details and a humorous bent that provide insight into the "contemporary" Deep South. And you don't have to be a civil war buff to enjoy this book. Because of this novel I'm going to read the author's entire canon! ”

This book is about how the civil war (or the "war of northern aggression" as some southerners call it) still impacts our life today. Very interest and funny.”

There were chapters that made me laugh out loud on one page, and question my own prejudice on another. A fascinating, sensitive look at the modern South and the ways our past can come to define us. It was a joy to read and to let it guide me through a reevaluation of my relationship with Southern culture. Even if you aren't a Civil War freak, this book has a richness to offer that will continue to surprise you ”

The nation that wins the war gets to write the history. Most people I talk to have no idea that there were two legitimate sides in the Civil War. Hopefully Horwitz has let that reality show through a bit.”

I did not like it for the first half, but the end was much more interesting to me! It was more about the south as geography and culture and less about enactors. Then the part about Gone with the Wind, I enjoyed too.
That first section which was more than half the book, was just not my favorite subject. It was too MALE For me!
I like Tony a lot and will continue to read his books. Blue Latitudes, which we call the COOK BOOK, was just GLORIOUS! And I am looking forward to his take on Iraq soon! ”
