- Marian Catlin: Sweet, life loving young woman. She moves in next door to Ruth and Joe. Mother of Debby and wife of John
- Ruth: Joe's wife. She is very patient with him and his often times grumpiness.
- Jim Peck: Beatnik character that shows up at Joe and Ruth's and decides to squat on their land and makes a home in their tree. The idea that he thought it was okay to live off these people is a bit strange to me.
- Debby: Little daughter of Marian and John.
- John: Marian's husband.
- Julie Lopresti: Neighbor's daughter. She loves to ride her horse and is a very rebellious teenager.
- Fran Lopresti: Julie's mother.
- Tom Weld: Lives behind Joe and is his arch nemesis. Wants to make lots of money off his land by subdividing.
- Joe: The main character and narrator of this book. He is retired and has moved to the area to get away from the painful memories of his son's death. He is a cantankerous old man that doesn't want to give too many people the chance to get to know him. Really is an old softie on the inside despite his tough exterior.
