Berserk is not for the faint of heart--blood, gore and horror galore. The best part of the series is the extended flashback (which covers most of the earlier numbers) in which the plot and character development is excellent.

The first vol is about Guts, he has a brand and it kind of summons evil spirits to him.

I've watched the anime, so far I enjoy the anime a lot better..but in the manga there is a LOT more too the story, and some background information relieved.

    differences...

in the anime, Guts heads on into town. There's a barmaid being tormented, which Guts saves. He then sends a message from a bad guy to send to the king that the "Blackswords man is back". He gets tormented by evil spirits. He heads to the castle, if I remember right he fights Griffith as the king there. Then it's off to flash backs.

in this manga however. It's a fairy "elf" he saves. She's kind of annoying and follows him. Guts gets tortured a bit and saved by the fairy. He defeats this snake like guy. Then he ends up traveling and his brand summons evil spirits his direction (more people died than needed. Guts is kind of a jerk that weak people should die anyway, that if they died because they got in other peoples battles it's what they deserved which kind of pissed me off) and he's off to a new town.

I enjoy Guts character better in the anime, and I like the quicker pace the anime has. THOUGH there is some important and interesting facts the manga tells you.

This got me very interested in the character and what he is all about. I loved the violence and humor both were well done. I especially like the interaction with his tinkerbell whom he constantly smacks around.

Berserk is the stuff of nightmares. But nightmares are still dreams....
