Richard Knox has just been released from prison following a sentence imposed for brutalising and raping an elderly man. He decides to leave his native Newcstle and resettle in his Grandmother's old home in Aberdeen. The job of monitoring him and keeping his past secret from the local community falls to DS Logan McRae, but as ever McRae's workload is anything but manageable and he finds himself involved in several other serious investigations. First there's the case of the art student found with £30,000 of counterfeit bank notes, quickly followed by the police informant found encased in the foundations of a new housing development. Oh, and not to mention the individual robbing jeweller's shops whilst accompanied by a toddler in a buggy!
As usual McRae's boss, DI Steel is good at delegating, but not at supporting or sharing and Logan being the hard headed, stubborn hands on cop that we know from previous novels is constantly digging himself into and out of occupational holes.
As well as trying to solve the various cases assigned to him McRae finds himself curious about DI Danby who has accompanied the offender Knox north of the border. He senses there's more to the picture than anyone involved is prepared to admit and feels compelled to go looking for answers. Is it any wonder that McRae's personal life is in meltdown!
The multiple strands of the plot develop at a nice pace as the story proceeds, some reaching conclusions before the climax of the novel, others only becoming clear right at the very end. As ever McRae triumphs ultimately, but in a very measured and human way and you're left with the impression that the stresses and damage his career is inflicting on him physically and emotionally have to be having a cumulative impact that will manifest in the future. By the end he's just become a surrogate father and has seen his daughter for the first time, will this alter his outlook on life and his way of living it?
