Space + poetry = WOW! I would have never thought to write a poetry book about the planets. My favorite poem was the one about Pluto being demoted.

This was also a great book to use at summer school to give students ideas for writing their own poems about planets.

Comets, Stars, the Moon, and Mars: Space Poems and Paintings
    by Douglas Florian
    Reading level: kindergarten 1st grade
    Publisher: Harcourt Children's Books
Date of publication: (April 1, 2007)

This book tells of clever and brilliant poems about our solar system. They use beautiful illustrations to tell the stories about the planets, asteroids and other things found in outer space. This book would be a great reference and student could use the poems found inside as poems for the class.

    Personal Review
A collection of poems about the solar system. Children will love the illustrations. Many of the pages have holes, and as you turn the pages through the holes you can see the previous page, and it adds to the illustrations on the current page…very fun. One poem is a curling spiral of words. The poems vary in length, and have different rhyme schemes. They are all short and simple yet very informative. There is also a glossary that provides additional information, and short bibliography.

    Extension

Standard: S1CS5 Students will communicate scientific ideas and activities clearly.
    b. Draw pictures (grade level appropriate) that correctly portray features of the thing being described.

Activity: Use this text to introduce the solar system. Have each student choose a planet to study, then group students together based on the planets they choose. Students will work together to research and present the information they found. This can be a simple activity that takes a class period, or it can be an ongoing project that requires a model or additional visual aids.
