Could have used more character development for certain characters. Book tends to jump around a lot and I hated the ending as they leave it hanging for the next book. Damn you! Still a decent read for a couple hours.

I love zombie novels. This series starts off stronger, then, for me, loses some muscle.

I love zombie fiction, but the ending was harsh.

This is a very non-traditional zombie affair here. Just to let people looking for a traditional zombie novel that they probably shouldn't look here...the 'zombies' can talk. Started out good but the author just kept adding characters and different stories so it became hard to juggle all the different angles. I was thinking this was a four star book at the beginning then went down to a four star during the middle chunk and I almost brought it back up to a four because of the ending but just didn't have that 'wow' factor I was looking for.

I started out being really into this book. The first couple of chapters really grabbed me, but eventually the book became too graphic for me. A chapter depicting coming down from heroin addiction particularly turned me off, and one of my all time favorite movies is the gorefest Zombi.

The book is well written, but I was turned off by it. If you don't mind over the top graphic descriptions, then you'll be pleased with it. If you want a zombie story with more of a message, check out World War Z.

I enjoyed this book, a somewhat different take on the classic zombie tale. A lot of hokey dialogue and formulaic characters, but it works well enough that I will read the sequel soon.

I had heard good things about Keene so I was motivated enough to actually buy this in paperback after reading the first couple of chapters in the bookstore. He takes an interesting twist on Romero's "When there is no more room in Hell, the Dead will rise to walk the Earth" explanation in that here a supercollider (such as the CERN being repaired for startup in Europe) experiment gone wrong is given as the cause for demons from "the Void" being able to inhabit the bodies of the dead. Having done a lot of reading about elementary particle physics and quantum mechanics myself lately, I was amused by Keene's use of the collider. More on the science later.

While the plot hurls itself into action from the first page, by about halfway through the book I was getting the distinct impression that Keene was really most interested in gore for the sake of gore and there was very little storytelling going on. In other words, I was bored. O.K. having zombie animals and organized if not sentient ones at that was interesting, driving and shooting zombies was cool and terrifying although certainly not used to their best advantage in my opinion. Neither of things was explained to my satisfaction. How could a demon possess something without a soul? Or are we stipulating that animals had souls? Or were they being manipulated by an outside source? Keene was suggesting that even invertebrates such as earthworms were subject to this. Come on - why?

As far as the science goes, the tear in the universe (or tiny black hole if you like) that the collider experiment opened was the portal thru which the demons are able enter our dimension and possess bodies of the dead.

You have the usual government breakdown and army/militia/police banding together under a crazy leader and taking advantage of the lack of a power stucture to do bad, bad things. Meanwhile a few good people try to protect/reunite with their families/friends/lovers while being slowly picked off by the zombies/bad guys. Old themes, done before, done better. The ending in particular I thought was puzzling and wildly anticlimactic.
