Midaq Alley

Midaq Alley

by Naguib Mahfouz

Considered by many to be Mahfouz's best novel,  Midaq Alley centers around the  residents of one of the hustling, teeming back alleys  of Cairo. No other novel so vividly evokes the  sights and sounds of the city. The universality and  timelessness of this book cannot be denied. (read review)

This is the first Mahfouz book that I have read. It is set in Cairo during the 1940's and follows the lives of people who live and work in Midaq Alley. It really captures the essence of life of ordinary people in the Middle East during that period. The characters really come alive and it is easy to see why Mahfouz is considered one of the best Arabic authors. The characters are very vivid, the main female character quite evil, yet still likeable.

Read this for a history class, it's about the British Imperialistic occupation of Egypt in the 1940's. The characters are vivid, their tragedies and achievements make this a super read.
