“ALL CLEAR continues where BLACK OUT left off, with an intrepid team of time traveling historians trapped in the past. The driving question of the story is, will they get home? Have their “drops” back to the future closed because they’ve changed history for the worse? Or are they meant to be where they are to ensure the correct timeline? What role do they play during this difficult time in history?
The story jumps between viewpoints and time periods, although it’s still England in WWII. The vivid details of the Blitz stick in your mind and make you restless as you read about what the people of London experienced. How did they survive the constant anxiety from interrupted sleep, trips to shelters that might be destroyed, nightly bombings, threats of death and injury, hazardous rubble, fires, and more? No wonder they sent their children to the countryside for safety. You have to admire their courage, their optimistic attitude, and their steadfastness during this unsettled time. Thousands died before they knew the outcome would be a positive one. Secret plots to trick the German leaders with disinformation are also part of the story. You’ll learn more about the Londoners during the war than you’ve ever known and will experience it through the eyes of three sympathetic heroes.
I love Connie Willis’s gripping historical tales and will look for more from this talented author.
