They used to say it couldn't be done, that no one could blend the mystery story with the science fiction story, that if you played fair with the reader the key to the mystery would hinge on some obscure scientific fact that no one not conversant with science fiction could possibly spot, and that if it didn't turn on that type of clue, then why make it science fiction at all?
