by Kenneth J. Harvey

With no more cod to fish, Bareneed, the setting of Kenneth J. Harvey's powerfully eerie The Town That Forgot How to Breathe, has become another Newfoundland outport village on the wane. As one character laments, "Bareneed, once a lively and warm place, now stank of drabness and heartbreak." It's not much of a magnet for tourists, but it has attracted two visitors for the summer: a fisheries... (read more)

Kenneth Harvey paints a vivid picture of the seaside village and does a fairly nice job setting up his characters. The tone of this book is very eerie, creepy and at parts, it *is* suspenseful.

I felt this book moved a little too slow for my tastes. I struggled with reading it, but by the midpoint I was semi-engrossed. (Perhaps just due to a stubborn desire to finish.) At points, I found the constant changing of characters to be a little confusing. In addition, I found the characters...

I read this over a year ago, but ended up enjoying it quite a bit. The author melds the fantasy and horror elements into a fairly realistic story quite well. There is a gothic feel to the novel that was fun as well. I do remember it took me a little while to get into it, but once I was hooked, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Actually you should give it a chance as it gets quite entertaining as new charscters are introduced and the mystery starts to unravel.

I bought this book because I thought it sounded interesting, and I loved the cover. I also could not get into it, so I put it down and thought I would try again later. I have way too many books in my TBR pile to waste time. Books have to grab me in the first few chapters also. I am curious too, should I keep this one or throw it in the giveaway pile?

    Anyone read this?

I started reading this book after finding at B&N but just couldn't get into it. Did anyone actually find this a good read? Should I just get through the first couple of chapters before writing it off?
