I imagine that if there was a Gore Vidal for Sri Lanka, and a historical fiction series chronicling the history of the country, this would be one of the volumes -- the only other being, to my knowledge, "The Village in the Jungle".
de Kretser's portrait of SWRD Bandaraniyake is even more scathing than James Manor's. You really get a flavor for what life is like here, as well as some of the issues confronting the society. Better than many works of non-fiction.
