Excellent book. Sad at times, but mostly hysterical (ahh, I'm so punny). I'd recommend everyone read this. This is the sort of modern history more people should be reading. The men will feel ridiculous at times and the women may shudder some, but I think laughs are to be had by all.

The book covers the history of vibrators and 'hysteria'. I won't spoil any of it. It can get tedious and slow at parts, but the good bits more than make up for it. The info makes for great cocktail party conversation, such as: "Did you know they used to sell vibrators in Sears catalogs?" Some might blush and some others might get angry; those that get angry could probably benefit from the technology covered in the book. Read it.

This is a scholarly book, seems well researched. She discusses the history of 'hysteria', a term that literally means influenced by the uterus. So men can't get it. The case studies make one want to cry, particularly when women with a healthy sexual appetite were labeled pathological and given brain surgery as a cure.
