Edited 1/26/12: I was going back through my book timeline and came across this book. Having learned more about the Pearls, I can no longer say I can recommend this book in any fashion. There are other books out there that teach a similar kind of discipline using time outs as I used following this book that aren't written by people who hold an extremely warped view on Christianity. While the principle behind dealing with issues before you, as the parent, gets angry, is sound, I am afraid that the "Christian" perspective behind it is flawed and could lead those who are easily misled into a very bad situation. Check out my review on "Created to Be His Help Meet" for more information.

A friend of mine lent me this book after I was struggling with my son. I read it in an evening, it isn't a difficult read. She told me it would be controversial and it was immediately evident why. While I have no issue with spankings, this book makes every little thing a "switch" offense. Perhaps it is my modern sensibilities but I am uncomfortable with that approach. However, the principle behind the method is great. I started using it this morning, with time outs instead of switches, and found exactly what they promised. My son is respecting me a lot more, even after a morning of near consecutive time outs. His behavior isn't perfect but there is a marked improvement in just one morning. The technique works because I am handling the situation before I am angry creating security wihtin my child and less frustration within me.
