  • Matt: A teenage boy who is taken by the government to a workhouse when his family goes over their credit limit. He is an adept mathematician for his age. He thinks there is more to the workhouse than is being told to the public but he cannot prove it, he is assigned to the Top Floor in the workhouse due to his IQ.
  • Lauren: Matt's 12 year old sister
  • "Honey Lady": Sharlene Smoot is the woman who personally took Matt to the workhouse and who appears to be nice. Honey Lady is Matt's fake name for her because she is pretty and golden like honey.
  • Jeffery: He is on the Top Floor.
  • Paige: She is on the Top Floor. She helps with getting the news about the workhouse out.
  • Madeline: She is on the Top Floor. She thinks she is a fashion model
  • Reginald: A mysterious member of the Top Floor who sits in his glass cubicle all day with the shades drawn. No one else on the top floor knows anything about him.
  • Isaac: A member of the Top Floor. He is very into science fiction and space ship models. The only person he really has a connection with is Kia.
  • Abbie: Matt's youngest sister, who is in kindergarten.
  • Brennan: One of Matt's friends. He is equally gifted with math.
  • Sharlene Smoot: The head of the workhouse that Matt is forced to go to. She acts very sweet and her charisma is able to charm people easily. Sharlene is so smooth that Matt refers to her as "Honey Lady."
  • Nana: Matt's grandmother who has hurt her ankle but doesn't want to be sent to the hospital for fear she will be sent to a retirement community and never be allowed to leave.
  • Lester: One of Matt's friends at school.
  • Jessica: A First Floor girl at the workhouse.
