A decent review of the Spanish civil war, though it's so badly edited that the syntax and punctuation are distracting at times.

As with his other historical works he captures a "you are there" quality in his narrative. Unfortunately the maps provided do not allow for a similar experience.

Fascinating account of what a messed-up place Spain (indeed, Europe) was in the 1930s. Beevor, as a military historian, tends to over-emphasize the battle sequences. His descriptions of the broader significance of the SCW - which were of course much more important - almost seem disdainful: "well, of course, there was all this world sympathy stuff, now back to the action." Still, a good and enlightening read.
