Sexually-confused Barbara Covett's re-telling of how she dealt with her psychotic obsession with a colleague from work, the back story is that the colleague (Sheba) is having a controversial affair with a fifteen year old student (Connelly).

The book deals with both Barbara's need for friendship and her need for control over Sheba whilst simultaneously allowing us to follow Sheba as her live unravels due to the affair.

  • Barbara Covett: The main character and the narrator. An old woman working as the head of the history department at St. George's School. She keeps a diary of her life and interaction with Sheba. She is middle class, she use to be lower class when she was a child.
  • Bathsheba Hart: Bathsheba Hart, a teacher of Art at St. Georges' School. She has a affair with a student. She is upper class.
  • Richard Hart: Bathsheba's husband and former tutor at university. He is considerably older than Bathsheba.
