Aloysius is the village mad man, tolerated by neighbours but forced to eke out a living by doing odd jobs while he uses the hospitable woodlands for shelter. He is starved of human companionship;instead he has running conversations with trees and plants. Then love,or peculiar version of it,comes to Aloysius in the form of a solidly built German lady who has come to Jamaica as a photographer. Her name is Ing Schmidt.
Foor Inga , this madman is a revelation.Lunatic or not, Aloysius is capable of satisfying Inga's libido as frequently as she desires. But the romantic idyll is bruised when Inga invites a local butcher to join a me'nage a' trois, and shattered when the trio decides to burgle the house of Busha McIntosh....

Ahhh... Alyuisious Longshoreman Gossamer Technocratic.... Its the one book that I have read more times than the Bible! Not only is The Lunatic hilarious, but it so aptly describes the Jamaican lifestyle and experience. Having grown up with a family who embraced all things Jamaican I cant help but see different members of my family in the characters of this book.

When this book was first out, I received a copy as a gift from a friend. I took it with me on a flight back from Jamaica. During the flight, I giggled so much as I read that the stewardess tending my area finally got fed up with my outbursts and said to me,"listen, either you tell me what that book is about or quit reading." She was an avid reader and was aching to know what had captivated my imagination so.
The book describes several social dilemas in Jamaica through the eyes of a madman. In truth a schizophrenia.
Issues such as race and class, haves and have nots and of course politics that overshadowed every thing on the Island.
An excellent read, that provides many gut busting laughter, insight into the usually closed world of middle class Jamaicans, and a straight forward look at the position of a white German Tourist in Jamaica and how her colour protects her from doing time in Jail.

This book is about much more than a Jamaican "madman" and his German lover Inga--it tells a lot about Jamaica, and is also very philosophical. I LOVE this book, it is one of my favourites, and I have read it many times.
