  • David Parker: David Parker is the lead character. David is 26 years old when the story begins. At six feet tall, David has black hair, brown eyes and is of medium build. Before moving to NYC after college to pursue his career in journalism at the New York Daily Press, David lived in Philadelphia where he grew up. During his childhood David made frequent trips to Stuart Cove, Connecticut to visit his aunt and uncle . He especially enjoyed the company of his Uncle Walter, who was a seasoned fisherman and very different from his own father, a businessman. His uncle would sometimes take him out for short rides on his fishing boat or take him to Charley‘s Diner for a grilled cheese sandwich and soda. David came to realize later what these childhood times in Stuart Cove really meant for him, not unlike many of us as we look back on our own past. As a big city journalist David is ambitious and driven, taking on the challenging stories and putting in long hours. This schedule leaves little time for a personal life, so in an effort to relieve the stress David visits the gym and in his limited spare time has begun working on a novel. In fact The Legend of the Seahawk story opens with a scene of David working on his novel Antique Shop Murder. David views himself as a responsible, rational person of good intelligence. He is wary of people and events that don’t ’add up.’ – Which only raises the question — how to explain his reaction to the old fisherman, Pierce and to the unexplainable paranormal incident he encountered in Stuart Cove?
  • Claire Reid: Claire Reid is 24 years old when the story begins. She stands five feet five and is of small stature. She has long brown hair and hazel eyes. She was born and raised in Stuart Cove, Connecticut. She has an extraordinary interest in nautical history, especially lighthouses. Following this interest she volunteers as a tour guide at the Stone Ridge Lighthouse. Like her father, she works for the U.S. Coast Guard; while also attending college part time. She lives with a roommate, her friend Kay, in a small home about eight miles from town. Claire is a caring and trusting young women, at times she is slightly insecure, but she knows what she wants and that determination gives her strength.
  • Pierce: The old fisherman was born in 1924 and is known by everyone in the old port town of Stuart Cove. At 75 years old he has become an odd and remote presence among the town’s residents . As described by David, “the old man appeared to have a full head of white hair under his black Greek fisherman‘s cap. His dark tan stood out in contrast to his white beard. The deep lines in his face told of the many years he had spent on the water.” Pierce spends much of his time at the Fishhook Pub and keeps mostly to himself – that is until David returns to Stuart Cove to settle his aunt’s affairs after her death. The old fisherman approaches David with a story to tell, a story about the fishing vessel Seahawk and how she went down in a storm back in 1956. For some reason he is determined to share this story with David, and not for a moment does he consider David untrustworthy. This is a story the old man has kept to himself for a very long time. Yet he knows he is revealing the tale to the one person who will know what to do with the information. How does he know? Pierce is a mysterious fellow; no one can explain it – he just knows.
